Vegan French Onion Dip

I have always loved the classic french onion soup-mix dip recipe. It’s salty, beefy, and (honestly) so easy to inhale. While delicious, I wondered if it was possible to make an equally delicious vegan-friendly version of this crowd-pleasing dip. As it turns out, it’s an easy recipe and perfect for a little bit of indulgence. This recipe is best made 1 day in advance, but we’ve been known to scarf it down moments after making it as well. Whenever you enjoy it, you are sure to do just that!

Vegan French Onion Dip

A homemade, vegan version of the soup-mix onion dip that everyone loves.

  • 1 cup cashews raw
  • 1 cup water boiling
  • 1 tbsp olive oil extra virgin
  • 2 cups yellow onion diced
  • 6 garlic cloves minced
  • ½ tsp coconut sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 2 tsp soy sauce low sodium
  • 6 tbsp vegan mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp chopped onion dried
  • fresh parsley chopped
  • chips for serving


  • Combine cashews and boiling water in a small, heat-safe bowl. Cover and set aside for 20 minutes.
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions, garlic, coconut sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook and stir until the onions are caramelized, about 10 minutes.
  • Transfer cashews and water into a blender or food processor. Blend until creamy and smooth.
  • Add the cashew cream, soy sauce, mayonnaise, and dried chopped onion to the pan. Mix well. Remove from heat and transfer to a food processor.
  • Blend mixture in the food processor until creamy and smooth. Transfer dip to an oven-safe baking dish. Broil for 5 minutes, until top of dip is lightly browned.
  • Allow to cool. Cover and refrigerate until ready to be served (preferably overnight). Enjoy!
